Flag

Flag of CyprusThe flag of Cyprus (Greek: Σημαία της Κύπρου, Turkish: Kıbrıs bayrağı) is used from August 16, 1960. On a white background in yellow brass the contours of the entire island of Cyprus is indicated. The copper yellow symbolizes the many copper ore in the Cypriot soil. Under the picture of the island are two olive branches as a sign of peace. The flag was introduced by the Cypriot President Makarios III with the intention of the Turkish and Greek area to become closer together. For this reason, the colors of the Greek (blue) and Turkish (red) flag were avoided for its neutral look.

In practice, the Cypriot flag in the Greek part of Cyprus is used as well as the Greek flag. The Turkish part of the island, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, has its own flag.

The map of the island covers 44% of the flag. Its color is copper (Pantone 144-C). The olive branches are olive green (Pantone 336-C). The background of the flag is white. The ratio between the height and length of the flag is 3:5.

The flags that one finds in Greek Cyprus, often differ from these rules. The Greek Cypriot government took measures in October 2005 to ensure that only flags with these specifications were produced.
